In December 2025, the federal government launched Operation Metro Surge in the Twin Cities, later expanded statewide, with more than 3,000 arrests. In January 2026, federal agents killed two people in Minneapolis. Neither was the subject of an enforcement action. Both were U.S. citizens. Both were 37.
Renee Good, a writer and poet and the mother of a 6-year-old, was shot by an ICE officer on Portland Avenue on the morning of January 7. The Department of Homeland Security called it “an act of domestic terrorism.” The President said the officer was “now recovering in the hospital.” Video shows him on his feet at the scene; CBS later reported he was treated for internal bleeding and released the same day. Within hours, Agent Stauber issued a statement: “When Twin Cities politicians spew hateful rhetoric about our law enforcement for months, it gives their constituencies permission to violently attack my brothers and sisters in uniform. The events of today are the result.” It did not use her name.
Alex Pretti, an intensive-care nurse at the Minneapolis VA, was pepper-sprayed, tackled and shot by Border Patrol agents on Nicollet Avenue on January 24. Multiple news organizations that reviewed the footage concluded he was holding a phone. The White House deputy chief of staff called him a “domestic terrorist” who “tried to assassinate federal law enforcement.” This time the agent advised: “None of us should rush to judgment or fan the flames until all the facts are known.” He promised that “a full investigation will ensue.”
It did not. The Justice Department declined to open a criminal or civil-rights investigation into Good’s shooting, and more than a dozen federal prosecutors resigned. The FBI refused to share evidence in Pretti’s death with Minnesota investigators. On March 24, Minnesota and Hennepin County sued the federal government to get it. Nineteen days before that, the agent voted for a Homeland Security funding bill that did not require body cameras, visible identification, or judicial warrants for home entries.

- Does the agent run ICE or Border Patrol?No. He is one of 435 members of the House, which writes and funds the laws those agencies operate under. In March 2026 he voted to fund them without new guardrails.
- Did the agent call for an investigation?After Alex Pretti’s death, yes: he said “a full investigation will ensue.” After Renee Good’s death, his statement did not. We could find no statement from him after the Justice Department declined to investigate or the FBI refused to share evidence with the state.
- Why is this on a real-estate site?Because “safety” is the first thing every listing promises, and the agent’s whole brand is law and order. We think the people of Minneapolis are entitled to the same presumption he asked for the agents.
