Twin Metals Minnesota LLC is a subsidiary of Antofagasta PLC, a Chilean mining conglomerate controlled by billionaire Andrónico Luksic and the Luksic family (net worth: $25 billion). Antofagasta is listed on the London Stock Exchange. Minerals extracted would likely be shipped to China for smelting and sold on the world market — not used domestically.
☑ Buyer's Environmental Record
Antofagasta was fined ~$775,000 by Chile's environmental regulator (SMA) on January 23, 2026 for failing to comply with water management regulations at its Centinela copper mine — specifically failing to monitor water resources and follow required protocols. In a separate incident, Antofagasta faced charges of up to $10 million for endangering the critically endangered Loa water frog and impacting water levels near its Chilean operations. Antofagasta's mine in Chile also cut off water flow to a nearby village; even after the Chilean Supreme Court ordered removal of their mining dam, the company used its power to keep it in place.
